Surti papdi Recipe

Avarekalu Upma is a very famous breakfast dish in Karnataka. This Avarekai Uppittu is a savory style pudding made with Avarekai which is also known flat beans/Surti Papdi/Hyacinth beans which is used in India cuisine, but this is one of the favorite beans of many people in Karnataka. In Bengaluru there is very famous Mela happens called as Avarekai Mela where you get fresh Avarekai from different parts of  Karnataka.

There are a variety of delicious dishes we can prepare using Surti Papdi/Hyacinth beans like roti, rice curries etc. Here is one such recipe called Avarekalu Upma/Uppittu

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Rava/semolina
  • 2 green chilies
  • 1 tsp chana dal
  • 1 tsp urad dal
  • 1-inch ginger, finely chopped
  • salt as per taste
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 3 tsp ghee/oil
  • 2.5 cup water
  • 1/2 cup cooked/frozen Avarekalu(Hyacinth beans/Surti Papdi)
  • 1 tbsp coriander leaves
  • 2 tbsp grated coconut
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

Direction:

  1. Firstly, heat the pan and dry roast the Rava/semolina on low flame till you get a nice aroma. Keep stirring continuously to avoid burning of Rava.
  2. Keep the roasted Rava aside. In the same pan add ghee/oil
  3. While oil becomes hot, add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
  4. Also, add chana dal and urad dal and fry till dals turn light brown.
  5. Likewise, add green chilies, ginger, and curry leaves. Saute for few seconds
  6. Further, add onion and fry until they turn transparent.
  7. Furthermore, add boiled/frozen Avarekalu/Hyacinth beans and cook for a minute or two on medium flame.
  8. Then add water and bring it to boil. Add salt to taste.
  9. Once the water starts to boil, on low flame add roasted Rava slowly and mix well slowly so that no lumps are formed.
  10. Cover the pan and cook for 3-4 min on low flame. Once done add lemon juice and mix well.
  11. At last, Garnish with coriander leaves and grated coconut.
  12. Finally, our Avarekai Uppit is ready to serve.

  1. I’m not sure exactly why but this web site is loading extremely slow for me. Is anyone else having this problem or is it a issue on my end? I’ll check back later on and see if the problem still exists.
